Position Announcement: New York State Folk Arts Education Network Coordinator
Local Learning: The National Network for Folk Arts in Education and New York Folklore are seeking a part-time staff member to serve as a Folk Arts Education Network Coordinator for New York State. A candidate must be able to work independently and have a developed understanding of how partnerships can be fostered and sustained among diverse communities and across disciplines. This individual will amplify the network’s public work and reach and work to address underserved and underrepresented identities and perspectives in arts education.
The Folk Arts Education Network Coordinator is a professional folklorist, educator, or culture worker who reports to the Local Learning and New York Folklore Executive Directors and works collaboratively with staff, artists, and community members on the Folk Arts Education Network design, development, and engagement. While the position will require substantial flexibility due to the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic in FY21, the position will largely focus on the annual Culture, Community, and the Classroom program; publicizing, nurturing, and amplifying the Folk Arts Education Network; and coordinating the first annual network convening in November 2021.
This will be a one-year, .5 FTE position that may be renewable. The compensation is $20,000. There are opportunities for growth in this position with the right candidate. The coordinator will reside in New York State. Applications will be reviewed starting January 5, 2021. The application process will remain open until the position is filled. Duties:
- Create ongoing opportunities for connecting educators, artists, and folklorists who have participated in Local Learning and New York Folklore folk arts education programs, including the Culture, Community and the Classroom initiative.
- Coordinate local hosting, marketing, participant communication, and registration for the 2021 Culture, Community, and the Classroom summer workshop and fall showcase.
- Work in partnership with Local Learning to develop program agenda and arts residency details for Culture, Community, and the Classroom.
- Handle administrative duties for an annual folk arts education convening.
Required skills and credentials:
- Communications: Able to use multiple platforms—including social media, email, zoom, phone calls, and face-to-face conversation (when it is safe to do this)—to connect diverse partners and stakeholders in folk arts education.
- Experience in the classroom or other learning spaces (museum, library, community center), and/or experience as a facilitator.
- An advanced degree or 3-5 years of experience in folklore, cultural sustainability, and/or community-based artistic traditions.
Preferred skills:
- Grant writing and some knowledge of fundraising for nonprofit programs.
- Ability to conduct fieldwork and identify artists for participation in the network.
