Culture, Community, and the Classroom: Professional Development for Educators and Artists

Free for Western New York Teachers and Regional Traditional Artists

Location: Genesee Valley BOCES, Le Roy, NY

Workshop Dates: June 27-28, 2019

This innovative workshop model brings Educators and Artists together to learn.

This workshop is offered by Local Learning: The National Network for Folk Arts in Education. The series will also support 8 artist-teacher partners in mini residencies in September-November 2019, concluding with a follow-up gathering at the Rochester Museum and Science Center.  This professional development series in Western New York will strengthen the connection between artists who practice art forms that reflect local traditions and cultures of the region, and educators in K-12 schools and museums.

Teachers: Build personal plans for the inclusion of culture—especially traditions and art forms meaningful locally—in your classrooms. CTLE credits will be available.

Artists: Learn methods to convey the significance of your cultural knowledge and create a plan to share key details about your art form and its context to diverse audiences.

All Educators and Artists are invited to register and participate in the June 27-28 workshop. Phase 2 participation in residencies will be by invitation. Let us know if you are interested in being a host teacher for this phase and we’ll provide more information. For questions or inquiries, contact Lisa Rathje at lisa@locallearningnetwork.org.
